The women of Gee’s Bend, a small rural Black community in Alabama of about seven hundred residents, have been creating bold, visually distinctive quilts since at least the 1920s.
Sue Willie Seltzer was born in Gee’s Bend but also lived in Rehoboth, Alabama. Her quilts are notable for their originality and whimsy. For fifty years, her work was characterized by innovation and unpredictability.
