Evening Wind

Edward Hopper

American, 1882 - 1967

Much of the artistry in Hopper’s etchings lies in his ability to compose scenes that are at once ephemeral and profound. Here, he captures a chance moment when a gust of wind surprises a young woman as she climbs into bed. Like many figures in Hopper’s etchings she appears anonymous, turned away from the viewer in a setting that portrays a sense of isolation within an urban environment. The billowing white curtain simultaneously interrupts the dark interior and draws the woman’s gaze toward the open window.
