Plague Quarantine Sign
Artist/maker unknownPlagues ravaged Europe repeatedly from the fourteenth to the eighteenth century. Panic about the spread of the disease led cities to pass ordinances isolating its victims. Houses found to contain plague were marked with signs such as this warning outsiders to stay away and forcing those within--both sick and healthy--to remain there.
