Artist/maker unknownDishes depicting maps of Japan gained popularity during the Tempyo era (1830–1844) of the Edo period. In 1822, the surveyor and cartographer Ino Tadataka published a map of the entire Japanese coastline. This map was used to decorate dishes of varying shapes and sizes. The waves of the sea are drawn with the spiral octopus arabesque that is one of the typical Arita ware patterns.
