Pillow

The designs of this small headrest demonstrate elements of traditional Chinese architecture intended to ward off malicious influences. A pair of ferocious-looking lions flank an exterior gate with overhanging roofs, which are further guarded by mythical animals. The two sides of this pillow, carved in the form of demon masks, possibly represent the so-called “devil tiles” (guiwa) that often adorn the ends of roof ridges in traditional Chinese architecture.
