Robe Series, The Descent
Dorothea RockburneAmerican (born Canada), born 1932
Inspired by the folds of clothing on figures in Italian paintings from the 1400s and 1500s, Robe Series, The Descent exemplifies Rockburne’s carefully calibrated geometric compositions painted in colors that transmit a sense of dynamism. In her works, color and form are intimately intertwined. As the artist explains, “I look at the shapes until I see them in color.”
By rejecting a singular rectangular canvas, Rockburne’s paintings achieve an elegant feeling of movement and effortless equilibrium.
