The Trial of Mucius Scaevola

Vittorio Maria Bigari

Italian, 1692 - 1776

Bigari collaborated on many fresco decorations in towns around Bologna. This study for a wall painting in the main salon of a palace in Faenza, near Bologna, shows a scene from Livy's Early History of Rome in which a young Roman aristocrat, Mucius Scaevola, confronts the invading Etruscans and thrusts his right hand into the fire to demonstrate his fearlessness.
