The Tempest
Abraham CasembrotDutch (active Sicily), c. 1593 - 1658
Abraham Casembrot depicts the port of Messina, located in Sicily, in this series of etchings made for a Dutch art patron and collector. The title plate features a fountain crowned by the Roman sea god Neptune, a symbol of Messina’s maritime activities, which included economic trade and military operations.
Casembrot’s etchings have a rough sketchiness that convey a sense of daily life in the harbor having been captured on the fly.
