Dreamworld: Surrealism at 100 celebrates the centennial of AndrĂ© Breton’s Manifesto of Surrealism, the document that launched one of the 20th century’s leading cultural movements. Dive deeper into works by major Surrealist artists, including Leonora Carrington, Max Ernst, Frida Kahlo, Salvador DalĂ, Joan MirĂł, and Dorothea Tanning.
Exhibition curator Matthew Affron will consider what these works say about the ideas and motivations at the heart of Surrealism as it evolved between the early 1920s and the 1960s and spread beyond its birthplace in Paris to become an international phenomenon.

About the speaker:
Matthew Affron is the Muriel and Philip Berman Curator of Modern Art at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the curator of Dreamworld: Surrealism at 100 in Philadelphia. Since coming to the museum in 2013, Affron has been curator or co-curator of major exhibitions including Matisse in the 1930s (2022-23), The Essential Duchamp (2018–19), and Paint the Revolution: Mexican Modernism, 1910–1950 (2016–17).
